September 6-7, 2008

*This is a tentative schedule of events to occur during the Dedication weekend and 80th Year celebration kick-off. For media planning purposes. Confirmed details can be provided upon request.

Saturday, September 6

• Private/small group dedications and blessings of various areas/rooms as donated by benefactors;
Public dedication and blessing of the Msgr. Swetland Assembly Room (Msgr. Swetland served the SJCNC community for ten years);
Lecture by Msgr. Stuart Swetland, “Ministering to the Millennials,” in the Msgr. Swetland Assembly Room. The lecture will focus on the spiritual, social, and intellectual needs of today’s college student, as served by those in Catholic campus ministry;
Panel presentation on the new Institute of Catholic Thought by Institute Director Dr. Ken Howell, Dr. David Delaney, and other associated fellows;
• Private and group tours of the new and expanded facilities at St. John Catholic Newman Center (read the detailed campaign and facilities overview);
• St. John Catholic Newman Center tailgate event with Chaplain Emeritus, Msgr. Edward Duncan followed by UI Football vs. Eastern Illinois University;
Opening New Doors Campaign Gala in University of Illinois Illini Union Ballroom (Dignitaries and special guests from the Diocese, University and Catholic community invited and expected to attend).

Sunday, September 7

• Private/small group dedications and blessings of various areas/rooms as donated by benefactors.
Mass of Dedication & Thanksgiving, 12:00 pm, St. John’s Chapel; Bishop Daniel Jenky, CSC celebrant; a “high Mass” followed by a champagne and light lunch reception; the Bishop will walk the building in a blessing rite at the conclusion of the liturgy; SJCNC choirs will perform;
Formal Ribbon Cutting, 2:00 pm, Sixth Street entrance; Bishop Jenky, local mayors and University of Illinois administration expected to attend.
