About St. John's Catholic Newman Center
St. John’s Catholic Newman Center is the largest Newman ministry of its kind in the United States. It stands at the heart of one of the world’s best-known secular universities. But where it stands is far less important than why it stands. For 80 years, it’s stood as a bulwark of moral integrity, nurturing young Catholics in their faith, providing a place of joy and community, and preparing them for a life of service, both within the church and throughout a turbulent world.
St. John’s Catholic Newman Center has three pillars:
• Newman Hall has existed for more than 70 years as a safe haven of personal guidance, moral framework, and community helping students create pathways to their future. It’s a unique place of residence that provides the necessary space for authentic Catholic community to thrive. Newman Hall has been filled to capacity since 1948.
• St. John’s Catholic Chapel is in the heart of the campus and has served as the center of the Newman Foundation since 1927. On average, the weekend Mass has 3,000 students in attendance. Students are drawn into community through bible studies and retreat programs geared toward evangelization. There are a number of opportunities for liturgical assistance, vocational discernment, personal enrichment, service and outreach.
• The Institute of Catholic Thought is an academic center devoted to the study of Catholicism in its relation to the intellectual and cultural heritage of the western world. Students are offered an opportunity to enroll in credit and non-credit courses to provide an authentic Catholic college education in a secular university environment. The Institute pursues goals of scholarly research and interaction which aim at enhancing the Church’s mission in the world.
