Summary of 80th Year Events
General Events (Center-wide)
• Tours each day of the new building, given by student ambassadors.
• Upgraded website, telling more of the SJCNC story, showing current events and news, more photos, better calendaring, web 2.0 functionality, alumni features, etc.
• Speaker Series (Tentative name, “Te Deum Series” which was the former name of the speaker series in the 1950’s)
o The Real Exorcist: Fr. Vince Lampert: October 30, 2008; a certified and trained exorcist for the Catholic Church, Fr. Lampert will address common misconceptions about exorcism – and validate many of the horror stories.
o Genuine Friendship: Fr. Halfacre: February 11, 2009. Just in time for St. Valentine’s Day, this priest of the Diocese of Peoria will discuss his new book on love and friendship and apply it to today’s college culture
• Graduation Mass and Closing of the 80th Year Celebration, May 16, 2009. Francis Cardinal George will celebrate the closing Mass of the year, with a reception to follow.
Chapel Events
• Special Choir Concerts given by the combined SJCNC choirs throughout the year;
• Mission & 40 Hours Devotion: February 28-March 3, 2009; Given by Fr. Kelleher
• Newman Foundation Koinonia (NFK) 100 Retreat and Reunion: February 6-8, 2009. First started in 1981, the NFK experience is the core retreat ministry of the Center. Over 200 students attend each year and there are several thousand active alumni who attend reunion Masses and still keep in touch. NFK 100 will offer both a regular retreat for students and a “reunion retreat” for alumni that same weekend.
• Lecture on the Windows of St. John’s Chapel presented by UI Assistant Professor of Medieval Studies, Dr. Paula Carns.
Hall Events
• Special displays throughout the year on the history of Newman Hall
• Resident Assistant Reunion at Homecoming (October 11, 2008)
Institute of Catholic Thought Events
• Distinguished speaker series:
o Msgr. Robert Sokolowski: Professor of Philosophy at CUA and a phenomemologist.
o #2 speaker TBD
• Special collection rare Newman (SJCNC) memorabilia shown in the Bishop O’Rourke Library
• Kick-off of the “School of Theology Master’s Program”
